Is the U.S.A. slipping into a passive genocide or at least the disappearance of people with disabilities? Right now, as a woman who identifies with Christ and who lives with multiple disabilities (including 4 congenital "amputations," Traumatic Brain Injury, partial neck fusion and severe chronic pain), I live quite vulnerably. I face a potential FORCED MOVE into an institution. Short-term, I've lived twice already in such outrageously-expensive, low-quality nursing "homes." Such care is currently guaranteed under Medicaid, unlike my LOWER COST Medicaid-funded home care that may soon disappear. I feel incredibly blessed to live integrated in my community, in part INDEBTED to YOUR TAX DOLLARS. THANK YOU!!!
I grieve deeply the REP/DEM split-- in numerous ways a deceptive, destructive wall-- especially among Christians. I do not begin to defend inefficiently-spent tax dollars. I've lived the chaotic result of such waste & work to change it. Nonetheless, I implore you to learn how, quite immediately, LIVES LIKE MINE hang in the balance of current legislation. We disabled-poor long for your support MOST by way of your understanding that the largest chunk of MEDICAID, MEDICARE & PUBLIC HOUSING dollars supports people like ME-- the disabled, including seniors.
Why are we largely left out of the public discourse of BOTH DEM's & REP's? Where do we go from here in our attempt to protect the poorest, most defenseless in society, many of Christ's "least of these?" Who finds peace in simplified thought like, "Disability itself ends life," when in fact, a LOSS of CARE often ends our lives? Can we afford to avoid this fact in regard to the lives of people with disabilities, the poorest minority group in the U.S., then vote in clear conscience? After all, disability does not discriminate according to race, gender, or income level; it could be you due to a split-second car accident, aneurysm, or the like. Long-term disability devastates budgets of entire families.
Every source from Forbes magazine to AARP to Sojourners speaks accurately & consistently to the complex facts of my active life, buoyed by public assistance. I live body, mind & spirit in a fight to PRESERVE LIFE ITSELF. The disabled-- especially those who can't "pass" because they drool, smell of bodily waste, or live quite literally voiceless-- do not resemble the tender UNBORN. But I pray you do not avert your eye. Please do some homework about the disabled poor. I'd be happy to share my story over a cup of coffee or tea. Any challenge or question you offer will enable me to educate & present myself more factually, fully and precisely. I thank you in advance.

I am a graduate student (beginning my second year this fall) at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro for the Master's Degree in American History, specialization: Civil War/Reconstruction Era.
I have Asperger's Syndrome and mild hyptonic ataxic cerebral palsy.
I also have Medicaid.
I rely on it to secure essential medical services. This includes having services at my primary doctor's office, gastroenterologist's office, and dentist's office.
Medicaid is critical for me.

When my daughter was born in 1982, the future was described to be bleak. So glad that proved to be wrong. After she graduated from high school, she got a job at a day care center. Her job coach worked so hard to keep her successful in this arena. They were able to complete Stars certification. Next it was time to explore living in an apartment with support. She has lived with assistance for 9 years now. Eventually her job ended, but she found one at a photo studio. She fills her days off in the community with Special Olympic swimming and bowling, art class, computer class and volunteering at her church.
She could not live such a full life if she didn't have the support of the Medicaid waiver program where she gets help with medical coverage, job coaching and her caregiver hours for her roommate. She also benefits from assistance with transportation through our local Access bus. Section 8 housing helps her with her apartment.
All of these helps gives her great self esteem as she continues to conquer new goals in life. If not, she would stay in our home where she would spend her days lacking motivation, watching TV.
We are very grateful for the Medicaid waiver program.

This is my son Cory he is Autistic. He works at jack-in-the-box, wich he loves. He never missed a day of work. He works 6 days a week between 3 to 5 hours a day. This would not have happen if it was not for his JOB COACH, his JOB TRAINING, and PLACEMENT. He is a productive part of society. Cory is Learning to be independent, but unfortunately he will never be 100% independent. I will not out live him so he will need the support of SUPPORTED LIVING. So I ask save our Medicaid services
